 Miss Peterson

Welcome to Hayden Peak Elementary 2nd grade!  I am excited to be your child’s teacher this year.  I am looking forward to a successful year filled with many positive learning experiences.  We will be focusing on becoming leaders by implementing the 7 Habits in our classroom as we participate in the Leader in Me program.

The following contains general information about our classroom.

Homework:  Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes daily, study their weekly spelling word sorts, and complete any other work that is assigned, such as math papers or book reports.   Please record home reading minutes in your child's planner and on the Road to Success website.  Spelling words are sent home on Mondays and tests are on Fridays.
Math practice assignments are sent home on a daily basis and are due the following day.  Information about book report due dates will be included in the weekly newsletter.

Behavior:  Students are expected to follow our school and classroom rules.  Our classroom rules are: 1. Be kind, 2. Listen and follow directions, 3. Respect others and their property, 4. Always do your best work.
We have a classroom stop light and clothes pin system to help us keep track of our daily behavior. Each student has a clothes pin which starts each day on green.  Those students who choose not to follow our established rules will first receive a verbal warning and be asked to move their clothes pin to yellow.
Students who persist in misbehaving will then be asked to move their clothes pin to red which has the consequence of losing 5 minutes of recess.
I will contact parents at home if a student consistently misbehaves or if a situation arises that I feel needs to be addressed with a parent.

Students who follow the established rules will receive praise, Hawkeye Awards, and they may participate in free time activities and Hawk Time on Fridays.  We will also work together as a class to fill our “Kindness Bucket” by following directions, being kind and respectful to each other, and working and playing cooperatively.  Once we have filled our bucket we will have a class celebration.

Water Bottles/Snacks:  Each student is welcome to bring a water bottle with a pop top to school to keep in his or her backpack as long as it does not become a distraction or is used inappropriately.  We ask that bottles contain water only and not colored beverages. As an entire second grade we are not permitting snacks to be eaten at recess.  Please make sure your child has a good breakfast before coming to school.  This should alleviate the need for a snack before lunch and it will encourage students to eat all of their lunches and not waste food.

Students of the Week:  Each week we will spotlight a different student in our class.  Students will be given a boy or girl paper cutout to decorate to look like them.  They may also bring several items to school to share with the class to help us get to know them better.  On Friday of that week, a parent or other family member is invited to come to our class  from 12:10 - 12:30 p.m. to share the spotlighted student’s favorite picture book and to tell us a little more about that student and answer any questions the other students may have.

Birthdays:  Students are welcome to bring a small treat to school to share with the class to celebrate their birthdays.  Treats must be commercially prepared and they will be handed out at the end of the school day.  Due to allergy concerns, please do not bring treats that contain nuts.

If you have questions or concerns at any time please feel free to contact me at the school in the mornings before school starts from 8:00 – 8:20 a.m. or after school from 3:30– 3:50 p.m.  If you would like to leave a message during school hours, I will return your call as soon as possible.  The school phone number is 801-280-0722.  You can also contact me by e-mail at karen.peterson@jordandistrict.org.

Thank you for your support!  I hope we can all work together to make this a very happy and productive school year for you and your child.
